The Hitachi DeskStar is a re-branded version of the commonly used IBM DeskStar and, as such, suffers the same failures. Hitachi hard drives are notorious for developing mechanical failures. This failure can be easily identified by a distinctive regular "scratching or clicking" noise.
Often, when a Hitachi hard drive develops a mechanical fault, it will not be recognized in the BIOS and it is important to power-down the hard drive immediately as continuous power-cycling will increase the damage to the hard drive's internal components and cause permanent data loss. This fault is commonly known in the industry as the 'click of death'.
This failure is caused by this unique design and manufacturing of the hard drive's read / write heads and the interaction of the GMR (Giant Magneto Resistive) technology with the data stored on the hard disk. These internal problems within the hard disk cause increased contamination, which in turn produce the clicking noise.
"Our server had been working without any problems for years, we thought we had an adequate back up policy. As is always the case with these things we found out we didn't too late. Fields had us up and running very quickly especially considering we sent the server to a higher priced lab first." - Jeff Long - Ink Express, Febuary 2009 [ Read More ]
