However, the IBM hard drive is notorious within the data recovery industry for developing mechanical faults. This failure can be identified by the hard drive producing a distinctive "scratching and clicking" noise.
When this occurs the IBM hard drive will not be recognized by the system's BIOS and it is important to resist the temptation to re-power the hard drive and to attempt 'DIY' data recovery. Continuous power-cycling will only increase the damage to the hard drive's data surface and is likely to cause permanent data loss. This fault is commonly known as the IBM DeskStar 'click of death'.
Using special techniques and a cleanroom environment, Fields’ engineers are able to correct this fault and usually return the data within a very short time period.

"Our server had been working without any problems for years, we thought we had an adequate back up policy. As is always the case with these things we found out we didn't too late. Fields had us up and running very quickly especially considering we sent the server to a higher priced lab first." - Jeff Long - Ink Express, Febuary 2009 [ Read More ]
