IBM Travelstar Data Recovery

IBM Travelstar Data Recovery

The IBM and Hitachi TravelStar drives suffer two common faults. The first can be recognized by a quiet and regular "ticking" noise from the hard drive; this will generally prevent the hard drive being seen in the laptop’s BIOS.

The second common fault also prevents the laptop from booting and the hard drive will again not be recognized in the BIOS. The main difference from the first failure is that no sound will be heard, not even from the platters rotating, and the hard drive will appear to be dead.

The hard drives affected by the above problems include:

IC25 Series:
IC25N020ATCS04 (20GB)IC25N020ATDA04 (20GB)
IC25N030ATCS04 (30GB)IC25N030ATDA04 (30GB)
IC25N040ATCS04 (40GB)IC25N040ATDA04 (40GB)

These problems can also occur in the DJSA and DARA series of IBM hard drives. When either of these failures occur it is vital that the IBM or Hitachi hard drive is powered down as soon as it begins to malfunction. Persistent efforts to recover the data by conventional means will result in permanent data loss through media damage.

"Our server had been working without any problems for years, we thought we had an adequate back up policy. As is always the case with these things we found out we didn't too late. Fields had us up and running very quickly especially considering we sent the server to a higher priced lab first." - Jeff Long - Ink Express, Febuary 2009 [ Read More ]
