RAID level 1 uses two hard drives and duplicates the data stored between them. RAID 1 systems are the slowest method of configuring a RAID array. However, it provides the highest level of fault-tolerance because the data is replicated onto two hard drives at the same time.
When one of the mirrored drives fails, or does not respond, the remaining hard drive will continue to serve and provide correct data. If one drive has a physical sector error, the mirrored drive will continue to function.
Due to the level of redundancy, the capacity of the array is half the total RAID capacity. For example, two 120GB hard drives that have a combined capacity of 240GB would have 120GB of usable storage. With hard drives with different capacities, there may be unused capacity on the RAID’s largest drive. RAID 1 increases cost as it takes twice as many hard drives to build the array.
Fields Data Recovery currently has in excess of 85% success rate for these types of RAID systems and offers the fastest turnaround time in the industry. "Our server had been working without any problems for years, we thought we had an adequate back up policy. As is always the case with these things we found out we didn't too late. Fields had us up and running very quickly especially considering we sent the server to a higher priced lab first." - Jeff Long - Ink Express, Febuary 2009 [ Read More ]
